After a pleasant few days in El Calafate, Trev and I took the bus across the border to the most southerly town of our trip, Puerto Natales, Chile. After discovering several book exchanges and a lovely little cafe we managed to entertain ourselves for the afternoon before boarding the ‘Evangalista’ for a three day, four night trip north to Puerto Montt.
We decided to rent a car from Santiago and drive to the port town of Valparaiso for a few days
An 18 hour overnight bus from Bariloche brought us in to Mendoza in time to celebrate Sally´s birthday…
After another 12 hours driving up Ruta40, this time at least with some change in scenery, Sal & I arrived in Bariloche…
To break up the Ruta 40 bus trip, we decided this would be a good time to try out staying at an Estancia. Where better than at an Estancia with ancient rock art sites within its property!?
Anticipating clearer weather, we ventured out on our third day in the small town of El Chalten to once of the nearby glaciers for some ice trekking…
After 2 days on a bus we arrived at El Chalten raring to go. Set at the foot of Cerro FitzRoy & known as the trekking capital of Argentina we found ourselves with a plethora of options to fill our few days in town.
The very touristy town of El Calafate proved to be a wonderful base for various day trips around the region…
The last five wonderful days have been spent by the dynamic duo trekking in the Torres del Paine National Park, doing the ´W´trek…
Flights to southern Patagonia are expensive and limited, so our choice of transport became a 2 day bus trip along Ruta 40.
According to one of our travel guide books, the boat trip around the waters of Bariloche is one not to be missed. It proved its popularity when we found that it would be three days until we could get a seat on one.
After a few days of wildlife it was time to turn our attention to the landscape side of things, enter Bariloche, where landscapes are the specialty.

Sal and I decided rather than staying in the larger towns of Trelew or Puerto Madryn in the coastal area of the province of Chubut in Patagonia, we would instead opt for the historic town of Gaiman…
